June 5, 1981 marks the 10th World Environment Day. Under the sloganLet`s protect our unique globe , the United Nations held the first Human Environment Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, appealing to all the people of the world, regardless of their religion, ideology, and territory, to join in a global campaign to preserve the human environment. The Conference, attended by delegates from 113 countries including the Republic of Korea, declared the Human Environment Chapter and designated June 5 as the World Environment Day, In confirmation of the resolution and ceaseless endeavor to prevent pollution. In conformity with the Conference declaration, Korea has been making every effort to solve the environmental problems caused by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Our determination as a nation is matkedly reflected in the newly adopted Constitution which provides for the people`s environmental right. The Office of Environment, set up in January, 1980 is busily engaged in various activies ranging from research on prevention og air, water and soil pollution, planning and supervising for environmental preservation, to the promotion of public awareness of environmental preservation. It is easy to pollute environment but difficult to clean it up. It takes time, resources and hard work to rehabilitate the contaminated environment. So, proper actions should be taken to protect it before it is too late. The Ministry of Communications issues these stamps to commemorate the 10th World Environment Day and reaffirm our resolute determination to keep our environment clean.
