Detail
`Ships are an indispensable means of international trade. In our country, whose foreign trade is increasing rapidly and whose economic growth is based on export, need for the development of shipbuilding technology can hardly be overemphasized. Thus our government has long been promoting the shipbuilding industry.
In celebration of the growth of our shipbuilding industry, the Ministry of Communications has decided to issue stamps depicting Korean-made ships this year. It is also hoped that the decision will effect diversification of our stamp material in such a way as to be palatable to philatelists at home and abroad. The folllowing are the third two stamps in this series.
1. The Boat
This 1,503.50G/T tug boat, built in 1977 by the Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., is used for carrying such cargoes as gigantic steel structures, construction materials and semiassembled blocks on board the flat barge trailing at its back, and also for tugging maritime equipments and oil rigs, or pulling big ships out of a crowded harbor.
With a small body only 64.8m long and 13m wide, the boat is, nevertheless, equipped with a powerful engine of 9,600hp., and is thus capable of tugging a barge 3 times its own size. It maximum speed per hour is 14.5 knots.
2. Stern Trawler
This 801.51G/T ship, 60.93m long and 11.20m wide and built by the Dae Sun Shipbuilding& Engineering Co., Ltd. has facilities for 40 crew members and is capable of making 15 konts per hour. The trawler is equipped with fish detecting radars and freezers for storing the fish it catches.
This trawler belongs to the dominant kind of fishing boats currently used by our fisheries for deepsea fishing.`
