Detail
`Ships are are an indispensable means of international trade. In our country, whose foreign trade is increasing rapidly and whose economic growth is based on export, need for the development of shipbuilding technology can hardly be overemphasized. Thus our government has long been promoting the shipbuilding industry. In celebration of the growth of our shipbuilding indutsry, the Ministry of Communications has decided to to issue stamps depicting Korean-made ships this year. It is also hoped that the decision will effect diversification of our stamp material in such a way to be palatable to philatelists at home and abroad. The following are the fourth two stamps in this series. 1. Forest Carrier One of the six forest carriers built during the period from 1977 through 1978 by the Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co., this 16,000 dwt forest carrier with two built-in gantry cranes, is 163.5m long, 22.86m wide and 11.8m deep, and is capable of making 15.5knots per hour. The ship, owned by Finland, is being used mainly for transportation of log from Finland and other northern European countries that are rich in forest resources. 2. Pure Car Carrier This 11,807.58G/T ship, 163.9m long, 24.7m wide and 13m deep, and built in 1980 by the Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co., is used only for transportation of cars. Equipped with special facilities for loading Korean-made cars providing a capacity to carry 2,650 Pointes at one time, the car carrier has given us an impetus and convenience in car-exporting business. Since, unlike other cargo ships, is has no cranes aboard, the ship is featured by a beautiful outline. Her maximum speed per hour is 19.0 knots.`
