Detail
`May 5, 1982 marks the 60th Children`s Day. The children`s movement in Korea dates back to March, 1923, when Bang Chung-hwan and other grown-ups set up ``Saekdong-hoe``, the first organization set up to promote the good of children. Coining and popularizing a new respectable word for children ``uh-rin-ee``, the organization did great pioneering work by designating the first of May as Children`s Day and observing it with various programs designed to enlighten the public on the importance of children as the nation`s future successors, to help raise their status both inside and outside the home, and to foster national spirit in them.
The observance of Children`s Day, which had been spreading throughout the whole country, was suspended by the Japanese colonical authorities, but was resumed after the Liberation. In 1946, May 5 was officially designated as Children`s Day. The government followed up in 1957 with the establishment of the Children`s Charter to be observed by the state, the community and the individual homes.
On this occasion of the 60th Children`s Day, ``Saesak-hoe``, the contemporary version of ``Saesak-hoe``, is preparing to hold a phtographic exhibition under the theme of ``Papa and Child`` in Korea, Japan and the United States.
The Ministry of Communications issues this stamp in commemoration of the delightful occasion of the 60th Children`s Day and joins with all the grown-up prople in wishing our children a happy future.`
