Detail
`The year 1982 marks the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the Korea-United States Treaty of Amity. The first Korea-United States treaty is the Korea-United States Treaty of Commerce and Amity concluded in 1882 between Ambassador Plenipotentiary Shin Hun of Korea and Admiral R.W. Shufeldt of the United States. The conclusion of the treaty was reached through the good offices of Lee Hong-chang of China, who arbitrated between the two countries expecting the treaty to help hold back the Japanese power in Korea and thus increase China`s influence on Korea.
This was the first treaty that Korea had concluded with a Western country, and was followed by the conclusion of treaties with other Western countries such as Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia and France.
The year after the singing of the treaty saw the first American ambassador plenipotentiary arriving at the port of Inchon, and the Korea government soon followed it with the appointment of Min Young-ick to Ambassador Plenipotentiary and sent him to the United States.
Later, in 1953, the relationship between the Republic of Korea and the United States was strengthened with the conclusion of the Mutual Defense Treaty. And the two countries have since been in close contact and cooperation in every field of mutual cocern.
The Ministry of Communications issues these postage stamps in order to commemorate the centennial the Korea-United Stamps Treaty of Amity and also to express our hope that the amity between the Republic of Korea and the United States will go growing in the future as it has in the past.`
