Detail
`World Tourism Day falls on September 28. The tourism industry of Korea has achieved a high growth rate annually during the past decade, and can reasonably expect more than 2,000,000 tourists to visit Korea annually in the early 1980`s. The Ministry of Communications issues two kinds of commemorative stamps, depicting Kyonghoeru and Baegdo Island, respectively, in the hope that the scenic sites of tourism of our country will be widely publicized both at home and abroad, and that the tourism industry will further contribute to the betterment of our country through making continuous development. 1. Kyonghoern located in Kyoungbok Palace: Kyonghoeru stands at the center of a lotus pond in the western part of the Kyoungbok Palace compound. Second only Keunjongjon in size in the palatial compound. This great pavilion, built in 1412 in the 12th year of King Taejong of the Yi Dynasty, used to be the venue of feasts for the kings, highranking officials including cabinet ministers, and foreign emissaries. It was rebuilt in 1865 as it was burnt down at the time of the Japanese invasion (1592-98) of Korea. It measures 34.4m by 28.5m in width. The grandiose structure gives a sense of symmetry and stability, with the exquisite and elegant architectural techniques that can be noticed from every detail. 2. Baeg-do Island: Baegdo Island is situated 16 miles east of Komundo Island which is 48 miles from the southwestern port city of Yosu. Dubbed as Mt. Kumgang (Diamond) of the southern coast, Baegdo comprises a total of 36 uninhabited islands and abounds in fantastic crags and rocky cliffs, presenting an unparalleled splendid view. The legendary island, preserving ancient mystery from time immemorial, also is renowned for a legend that a king of ancient China visited here in search of the herb that serves as an elixir of life. Baegdo Island boasts of a variety of flora and fauna. There also is a solarheat light house, the only one of its kind in Korea.`
