Detail
`For the World Tourism Day of 1979, which is September 28 as designated by the World Tourism Organization, the Ministry of Communications is issuing two commemorative postage stamps. The issuance of commemoratives is already a 4yearold practice, and the contribution made in terms of international tourism promotion has been great. Stamps have been found to be the best way to show our interest in tourism and to bring to the tourists` attention such attractions as our Mt. Mai and Yongdu Rock, the themes for this year`s stamps.
1. Mt. mai:
A rocky mountain, 667meters high, about 58km east of Chonju, North Cholla Province. The mountain is well known for its nickname ``Chaungjaebong`` meaning ``the male and female peaks rising together``.
At the foot of the female peak are pagodas which can be reached after a walk of 2km along the valley that divides the twin peaks. These pagodas, composed of some 120 ones, were made about sixty years ago by the hermit of Lee Kapyong mounting the small rock.
2. Yongdu Rock:
Yongduam (Dragon`s Head Rock) of 10meterhigh is a curious lava rock formation jutting out of the sea and is located in the suburbs of Cheju City, Cheju Island.
This rock has been renowned for the legend about dragon. The legend says that there was a dragon attempted to secretly ascend to heaven. Oneday it descended form Mt. Halla lying on this island and reached the sea to go to heaven. But the Heaven, got angry owing to its confidential scheme, petrified it as the existing rock.`
