Detail
This year, the Korea Football Association(KFA) holds its annual international President`s Cup Football Tournament for the 10th time. This year`s tournament, to be held in major cities of Korea from August 23 through September 5, will have eight teams of seven countries playing for the president`s cup. The participating countries are Malaysia, Indonesia, Tunisia, Thailand, Bahrain, Iran and Korea. It is said that the modern form of football originated from England around 1042 when England was being conquered by the Danes, It was played then as a way of resistance by the conquered against the conqueror. But as the game proved to be interesting not only to the player themselves but to the spectators as well, it soon spread out beyond England to many other parts of the world and was freed of politics and race. It has since been gaining ever-increasing popular sports game almost anywhere in the world. It was in 1896 that the first football-promoting body, called Korea Football Club, was organized in Korea. This game became enormously popular among the Korean people. In 1947, the KFA joined the International Federation of Football Association(FIFA), and we have since been sending our teams to various international games. As a way of improving our strength in football and bettering friendship with foreign countries, the KFA initiated theAsian Soccer Game (which later became today`s President`s Cup Football Tournament) in 1971. As this tournament grew older, the number of the participating countries also increased. Korea has won the cup many times in this tournament. The Ministry of Communications issues this stamp in order to commemorate the 10th President`s Cup Football Tournament and also as a sign of our sincere wish for the continued advancement of our football and of our sports in general.
