Detail
`September 28, 1980 marks the seventh World Tourism Day. The United Nations characterized international tourism as ``a passport to peace`` and also as ``an industry recommendable for all countries``. In 1973, the World Tourism Organization fixed upon September 28 as World Tourism Day and asked for friendly cooperation by all countries in the promotion of world tourism. Every World Tourism Day since 1975, the Ministry of Communications has issued two commemorative stamps depicting the two most well-known scenic sites of each province, in an attempt to direct the attention of people, both at home and abroad, to our country`s places to visit. The following two stamps are the last set of this series. 1. Baegma River The river flowing in the region of Chungnam Province where the Baegje Kingdom once flourished, has many cultural relics from this period along its course. Placed on the side of Mt. Buso facing Baegma River, Nagwha-am, ``the Rock of the Falling Flowers``, among ohter sites, is famous for the historical fact 3,000 court ladies of the Baegje Kingdom threw themselves from the rock down into the stream and thus killed themselves. A memorial service is held in this area every year for the memory of the court ladies who chose death rather than the shame of being captured by the soldiers who collapsed their kingdom. 2. The Three Peaks of Dodam This is a small island made of three strange rocks rising up through the water of South han River in Chungbuk Province. The Three Peaks of Dodam, whose beauty is said to be compared with that of Mt. Keumgang(Mt. Diamond), is one of the Eight Scenic Wonders Of Danyang. This island of the three peaks, about 12km north of Danyang, is the most beautiful of all the scenic sites in Chungbuk Province. `
