Detail
`In connection with the international campaigns to safeguard outstanding monuments, an important work will be done from the year of 1976 for safeguarding Moenjodaro which is one of the oldest cradles of ancient civilization.
Moenjodaro, the remain of the oldest town in Pakistan, was one of the world`s first four great civilizations. It flourished about 4,500 years ago (B.C. 2,500-1,500) along Indus river valley. The site of town was discovered in 1922. They built brick buildings solidly and most of the houses had a bath room.
From elaborate, bricklined drainage systems throughtout the town and tenmeter wide streets laid out in a rectangular pattern we can gather that they planned their town immensely and carefully.
We have to draw the attention of the worldwide public to the dangers that threaten Moenjodaro, an exceptional centre of the culture of ancient civilization, the rising groundwater, corrosion by salt and flooding of the Indus.
The Ministry of Communications is to issue this special postage stamp in order to make solid the intellectual solidarity of humanity for the safeguarding of important civilizations which should not disappear.`
