Detail
`Borobudur, a temple located in Java, Indonesia, is a unique and mammoth Buddhist sanctum on a square platform built around the 8th or 9th century A.D. This eightstorey high momument measures 31.5 meters. Its majestic and splendid form and scale have made it the largest and truly most unique Buddha temple in the whole world.
This massive temple is built with stone slabs on which are carved in relief the story to the life of Buddha and that of Jataka. However, in the recent times, Borobudur is being threatened with disintergration owing to heavy rains, sudden changes in temperature and erosion.
Unesco has contributed significantly in preserving this exotic cultural wealth of mankind. It is reconstructing this temple stone by stone on a firmer foundation so that it can remain staunch and unshakable with the comming of floods or earthquakes.
The Ministry of Communications, in consonance with this current international cpmpaign for the preservation of cultural properties, is comming out with an issue of a special postgae stamp depicting the Borobudur temple.`
