Detail
`Since the year of 1974, when the International Tourism Organization designated September 28 as International Tourism Day, the Day has been observed annually by all the countries of the world with various international programs of evevts designed for the promotion of international tourism and friendship. In observance of this meaningful day, the Ministry of Commounications is issuing commemorative postage stamps, for the second consecutive year, with Chamsungdan of Mt. Mani and Ilchumun of Tongdosa Temple as their themes for the purpose of publicizing the tourism sites to Korea, thereby contributing to the promotion of international tourism. 1. Chamsungdan, Mani Mountain Designated as Historical Relic No.136, Chamsungdan is located at the top of Mt. Mani(467m above sea level) on the southern tip of Ganghwado Island. It is known to be the altar where Dangun, the founding father of our country, used to offer prayers for the welfare of all his people. Nowadays, the holy fire is lit here and conveyed to the site of the annual National Athletic Meet. Ganghwa Island also is noted for such historic remains as Jeondungsa Temple and Samnang Sung. Hwamunsok(grass mattress with figures of flowers on it)is one of the special products handmade on this island which is situated northwest of Seoul. 2. Ilchumun, Tongdosa The front gate of Tongdosa Temple which is located at the foot of Mt. Yeongchwi, Gyeongsang Namdo Province. The temple is regarded as one of the three major temples of Korea. It was built in the 15th year of Queen Sunduk,(646 A. D.) the 27th monarch of the Silla Dynasty, by Jajang Yulsa, one of the then famous Buddhist monks, after he returned from Tang(China). The main hall of Tongdosa Temple, which is designated as Treasure No.144, is renowned for having no Buddhist statue enshrined.`
