Detail
`Mrs. Park Chung Hee, the late First Lady, was born in Kodong-ri, Okchon-eup, Okchon-gun, Chungchong Pukto, on November 29, 1925. She graduated from the Chukhyang Primary School in her home town and then from the Paehwa Girls` High School in Seoul. She was teaching at the Okchon Girls` Middle School when she married President Park on December 12, 1950.
The mother of two daughters, Keun-hye and Keun-young, and a son, Chiman, the First Lady died after she was shot by a gunman on August 15, 1974 during ceremonies marking the 29th anniversary of Korea`s liberation from Japan. The assassin committed the atrocity on orders from the Communists in north Korea.
Mrs. Park won great affection and admiration of all the people of this country for her leading, devoted role in undertaking a vast range of social service activities in which she extended her warm helping hands to the shady nooks of the society. Her concern and care were particularly directed to the improvement of women`s social status and welfare, the care of children and their education and attending to the aged who have no kin to look after them and the sick, including lepers.
The Ministry of Communications is issuing this special postage stamp in memory of the late First Lady, whose profound love for this country and its people will always be remembered, on the occasion of her 49th birthday.`
