Detail
`The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two postage stamps, depicting a rhododendron and Clematis patens, as the second of a flower series.
1. Rhododendron
The tree, which grows in the mountains of Korea, belongs to the rhododendron family, with its leaves being wide in the upper part and narrow in the lower portion with short hairs.
The flowers, which are quite similar to azalea, bloom at the tip of branch in two or three bunches together. Azaleas bloom in April precociously and are used in making Hwajon Byung(rice cake), while rhododendrons bloom in May and are cultivated widely as ornamental garden flower. Not edible because of viscous fluid of the flower, they are grown in pot or in the garden. The wood is used also for sculpture.
2. Large Euari(Clematis patens)
Belonging to the buttercup family, Clematis patens is found anywhere in Korea. A tendrilous plant, its whitish yellow flowers which are much larger than Euari(Clematis mundshurica), bloom in late spring through summer. They look very noble and dignified. The pointed leaves are theefold, with the seeds being similar to those of anemone.
This wild plant is suitable for cultivating in the garden or around the fence for ornamental purposes.`
