Detail
`October 24, 1975 marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Following the end of the 2nd World War, the United Nations came into being to replace the League of Nations that had been disorganized. The U.N. is an international organization designed for securing world peace and safety and for the prevention of another war by means of promoting international friendship and cooperation with regard to the solution of economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems. The U.N. now boasts a membership of 138 nations, comprising such organizations as the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice and the Secretariat in addition to 14 special agencies. It is devoted to the promotion of welfare and peace for all mankind. The Republic of Korea was officially recognized on December 12, 1948, by the U.N. as the only lawful government having jurisdiction over the whole peninsula of Korea. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War ignited by the north Korean Communist regime, it condemned the Pyongyang puppet regime as an ``aggressior``, swiftly dispatching U.N. troops composed of 16member countries to thwart the Communist plot of aggression. It is regrettable that our republic, in spite of the standing application for membership, has not been admitted to the U.N. because of opposition by some of its member nations. The Ministry of Communications is issuing a commemorative postage stamp in observance of the 30th anniversary of the U.N. which has contributed a great deal to the promotion of peace, welfare and development of mankind.`
