Detail
`It was 70 years ago that Red Cross movement was launched in our country for the first time. During the latter period of Imperial Korea, when modern civilization began to dawn in our country, Emperor Kojong proclaimed the ``Regulations Concerning the Korean Red Cross Society`` on October 27, 1905. In the days immediately following the Japanese merger of Korea, the Provisional Government of Korea established in Shanghai ``The Korean Red Cross Society``, and conducted medical treatment and relief activities for the Korean residents and soldiers then fighting for the independence of Korea in China. After the establishment of the Government of the Republic of Korea, the Red Cross Society of Korea was reorganized on October 27, 1949, and various Red Cross activities have been carried out both at home and abroad vigorously ever since. The Red Cross Society of the Republic of Korea, with the President of the Republic of Korea as its Honorary President, is now a member of the International Commission of Red Cross Society, boasting a membership of 4,500,000 throughout the country. As an organization dedicated to the promotion of humanity, public service and peace, it has continued to grow up to this date positively carrying out such campaigns as are intended for the relief and medical treatment of the destitute and disaster victims. For the past few years, the Korean Red Cross has been exerting itself to the realization of our longcherished reunion of family members separated in south and north Korea, through the holding of Red Cross meetings between south and north. On this occasion of observing the 70th anniversary of the Korean Red Cross Society, the Ministry of Communications is issuing a commemorative postage stamp in the hope that it will further devote itself to the cause of humanity and social purification.`
