Detail
`April 20, 1972 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Young Women`s Christian Association (YWCA) of Korea. YWCA, the oldest international women`s organization of its kind, was founded in Britain in 1855 primarily to help enhance the character of women and foster the spirit of social service in accordance with the teaching of Jesus Christ. Its headquaters now situated in Geneva, Switzerland, YWCA has since grown into a major world organization embracing 80 national YWCAs in as many countries. In Korea, YWCA was organized in 1922 by the late Dr. Helen Kim and Mrs. Kim Pil Ye. Today, the Korean YWCA has 170,000 adult members in 18 regions, more than 1,800 collegian members in 30 universities and colleges, and over 2,400 teen-age members, called Y-teens, in 80 middle and high schools in the country. The emblem of the Korean YWCA, a blue triangle with a horizontal line running across it, symbolizes intellect, virtue, and health as well as the devotion to social service, which all constitute essential factors for the development of mature, well-rounded personality. In honor of the remarkable achievements made by the Korean YWCA during the past five decades and in the hope that it will further contribute toward the social well-being in this country, the Ministry of Communications is issuing this commemorative stamp.`
