Detail
`The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two stamps as the second part of a series of postage stamps featuring Korean`s major national parks to give them broader publicity at home and abroad. The first two stamps of the series were issued on May 30, 1972. The new stamps depict the following two parks.
1. Kyongju National Park
(Designated on December 31, 1968. Area : 132 ㎢)
This famed park, made up of three historical and scenic areas of the city of Kyongju and its vicinity, is the nation`s richest repository of cultural assets and historical relics of the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C. - 935 A.D.)
- Namsan Area : Also called Mt. Gumo, Namsan was the mecca of Silla Buddhism boasting as many as 808 Buddhist temples, many of which still exist in the area covered with a dense forest of pine trees.
- Mt. Toam Area : The nucleus of the park, this is the seat of the Bulkuk-sa Temple and Sokkulam, the much-fabled mountaintop stone grotto. In the compound of the temple stands Tabo Pagoda known as the pinnacle of Silla architectural arts.
- Daebon Area : This east coast area is renowned for the underwater tomb of King Munmu, the 30th ruler of the Silla Dynasty. Also in the area is Daebon Beach, a favorite summer resort.
2. Mt. Sokri National Park
(Designated on March 24, 1970. Area : 105 ㎢)
This park consists of a branch of the Sobaek Mountains, whose spectacular peaks, including 1,057m - high Cohnhwang Peak, offers a magnificent scenery. In the park is the Bopju-sa Temple, which was built by Uishinchosa, a noted Buddhist priest, in the 14th year of King Chin-hung of the Silla Dynasty (553 A.D.). The temple abounds in masterpieces of Silla arts such as the Palsang Hall and the Ssangsaja Stone Lantern. These, together with the Sokyon Pond, are officially designated as national treasures. Along with the Kyongju National Park, this park present a year-round attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Especially famous is the beauty of its red-tinged autumn foliage.`
