Detail
`The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two postage stamps as the third part of a series introducing Korea`s major sightseeing places. 1. Asan (Hyonchung-sa) Situated at Onyang in Asan County, Chungchong Namdo, 118.1 km south of Seoul, Hyonchung-sa is the shrine built for Admiral Yi Sun Shin, Korea`s most admired national hero who successfully defended the nation from an invading Japanese fleet in the late 1590s. The admiral invented turtle-shaped ironplated battleships with which he won a decisive sea battle against the invaders, Called Kobukson, literally meaning turtle ships, these battleships were the first such vessels ever used in a naval battle in the world. Chungmugong, the title given Admiral Yi by then King Sonjo, means a loyal warrior. The shrine, popularly regarded as a symbol of partriotism, draws a steady stream of domestic visitors and foreign tourists throughout the year. 2. Uljin (Songryu-gul) This is a 470-meter-long limestone cavern in Kusan-ni, Keunnam-myon, Uljin-gun, Kyongsang Pukto. It was designated by the government as Natural Asset No. 155 on May 7, 1962. Prince Bochon (King Shinmun, the 31st king of Silla), who gave up his throne, built a Buddhist temple named Songryu-sa in this locality while he was studying Buddhism. The temple was burnt down during the Japanese invasion of the 1590s and the Buddhist statues which had been placed in it were taken into the cave. Hence the name of the cavern Songryu which means a sanctuary for Buddhist images. The cavern has thousands of fantastically shaped stalactite and stalagmite formations. Together with three ponds and 12 big flat grounds which are also in the cave, they present a marvelous subterranean scenery. Especially scenic are splendid natural towers and pillars formed by stalactite and streams that flow between them.`
