Detail
`The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two kinds of regular postage stamps with new designs : a five-won stamp depicting a squirrel and a 100-won stamp featuring the Kumkwanchong gold crown. 1. Squirrel (a Korean species) An aboreal rodent of the family Sciuridae, this squirrel has yellowish brown fur with five black stripes on the upperpart. The underpart is white. Its body is 12 to 15cm long and its tail measures 11 to 12cm. It has short legs. Having well-developed foreteeth, it feeds on pine nuts, fruits, acorns, chestnuts and insects. It also carries these feeds inside its cheeks to store them in its small cave for winter use. In winter, it lives in a tree hole. Gentle in nature, it is often raised as a household pet. This species of squirrels is widely distributed in the forests in Siberia, China, Korea and Hokkaido. 2. Kumkwanchong Gold Crown This gold crown of the silla dynasty has been designated as National Treasure No. 87. Made of numerous gold plates and jewels, the crown is 44.4cm high and 19cm in diameter. It has five tree-shaped and antler-shaped projections. The inner cap features fish-scale designs and complex openworks of geometrical patterns. Attached to the cap is a bird`s wing-shaped upright. The crown is embellished with 133 glittering spangles and 57 comma-shaped jewels. Two pendants decorated with comma-shaped jades are affixed to the rim of the crown. The bird`s wing-shaped ornament of the inner cap is covered with more than 200 sequin-like spangles.`
