Detail
`The First Asian Soccer Games, with President Park Chung Hee Cup at stake, will be held at Seoul Stadium for 12days from May 2 through May 13 under the sponsorship of the Korea Soccer Association.
This will be the first international soccer games to be held in Korea annually, sometime in May, with leading teams representing various countries in Asia participating. The event is aimed at encouraging the countries of Asia to promote the spirit of mutual cooperation and assistance through the regular holding of sports events.
It is also designed to demonstrate the brilliant image of an advancing Korea under the prominent leadership of President Park, at the same time enhancing the bravery and skills of the Korean soccer athletes who aspire for the world championship after successfully scoring the championship in Asia.
A total of 176 athletes and officers from eight countries - four afficers and 18 soccer players from each - are to take part in the forthcoming international sports games. Participating in the event are, besides Korea, Burma, the Republic of China, Indonesia, Khmer, Malaysia, Thailand and the Republic of Vietnam.
Also to be invited to the event are 10 leading figures of the world soccer arena, including Sir. Stanley Ford Rous, President of the International Federation of Football Associations, and former Premier Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia, who holds the office of the President of the Asian Soccer League.
Participating teams will be divided into two groups, and the best two teams from each division will be screened through the preliminary league games. The four finalist teams thus selected will vie in the final tournament matches for the pure gold cup to be presented by President Park.
The Ministry of Communications is to issue a commemorative postage stamp on this occasion in the hope that our soccer athletes will someday win the world championship throu further improvement of their skills and techniques and, at the same time, in an attempt to publicize the holding of this international sports event both at home and abroad.`
