For the purpose of raising efficiency in the vocational education, developing vocational skills and originality of students and of laying the foundation for bringing close together the production industry and academic learning, the Education Ministry sponsored the First National Skill Contest of Vocational High School Students in 1970.
This year, students are expected to compete in a total 23 event: five in agriculture (general husbandry, sericulture, livestock, agricultural product processing and forestry) at the College of Agriculture, Seoul National University; 12 in engineering (machinery, lathe, welding, molding, wood processing, carpentry, metal plate, electronics, electricity, civil engineering, architecture and automobile repairing) at Seoul Technical High School; three in commerce (commercial art, abacus calculation and typewriting) and another three in home economics (cooking, sewing and knitting) at Seoul Girl`s Commercial High School.
To take part in the contest are a total of 462 students who have been selected through preliminary contests in all provinces and major cities and thereby recommended by educational superintendents of respective areas.
Prize-winning students in the national contest will be awarded certificates of technical skills and scholarship funds, and will be exempted from tuition charges and other school fees. The Office of Labor also will give them certificates of 2nd-class technicians and job opportunities.
In order to help promote vocational education among the entire people of this country by having them realize the importance of the forthcoming event, the Ministry of Communications is to release a commemorative postage stamp.`
