`In order to publicize the outstanding paintings of Korea, both at home and abroad, the Ministry of Communications has selected nine items of painting of the Yi Dynasty(1392-1910) preserved at the National Meseum, for issuance of postage stamps bearing these paintings on three consecutive occasions, three paintings at each time. The first set of paintings comprises the following: 1. Huge painting of Scenic Mountains and Rivers This work is one of the representative paintings by Yi In-moon(1745-1821), which is 44.6cm in width and 859.7cm in length. This painting may well be considered as depicting a certain aspect of the history of Yi Dynasty paintings. Born in Haeju, Hwanghae-do Province, the artist served the government as a high-ranking military officer. He was particularly good in drawing scenic mountains and rivers and grapes. Other outstanding paintings by him include the one of grapes and that of people listening to the flow of waters under a pine tree. 2. Jongyangsa Temple at Mt. Kumgang(Diamond Mountain) One of the masterpieces painted by Chong, Son(1676-1759), this work was made on a fan-shaped paper, 22cm high and 67cm wide. He took an extensive tour of scenic spots and historical remains throughout the country, sketching a variety of sceneries. He made a great contribution to the establishment of the style of mountain and river painting, which is peculiar to Korea. A native of Kwangju, Cholla Nambdo he served the government as a local administration chief. Other works by him include a drawing of a grass-roofed pavilion, a painting of waterfalls of Mt. Kumgang, Yosan Waterfall and Inner Mt. Kumgang. 3. Mountains and Rivers Under Moonlight. The size of this painting by Kim, Doo-ryang(1696-1763) is 81.8cm in height and 49cm in width. A native of Kyongju, the ancient capital of Silla, he served the government until he was promoted to the rank of Byolje. Other outstanding works by the author, who was good especially in drawing scenery waterfalls and portraits, include the one of hunting, a stream under moonlight and others.`
