Detail
`The 21st General Assembly of International Military Sports Council will be held in Seoul from September 29 through October 9. The International Military Sports Council (Generally known as CISM) was first conceived by France and was established by the military representatives from five countries - France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Luxemburg - at a meeting in Nice, France in 1948, with a view to promote mutual understanding and cooperation, and to foster friendship among the soldiers of different countries. With its headquarters in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, the CISM has emerged as one of the largest world sports organization, with its 30 member nations, only next to the Olympic games. Being invited to the 10th field track athletic meet in Greece in 1955, our country had the first connection with the Council and finally became a formal membership in 1957. Korea has stepped up its CISM activities ever since, taking part in the athletic events of boxing, basketball, shooting, socker and field track entries. Moreover, the General Assembly of CISM for 1965 resolved to set up a South Asian chapter with the Republic of Korea, then the only member nation in the region designated as chairman of the chapter. With the 21st General Assembly slated to be held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea will be the first country in the South Asia that hosts the General Assembly of CISM. The 36 member nations and 25 observers who are expected to attend at the meeting will deal with such problems as establishing the schedule of athletic events for 1967, vote on the new membership, and budgetary matters, etc. The occasion will also provide an opportunity for us to demonstrate our traditional self-defense technique ``Taekwondo``. The Ministry of Communications will issue a commemorative postage stamp to celebrate the occasion and to widely publicize the purpose and significance of the Assembly.`
