2013 is a meaningful year that marks the 50th anniversary of the Law Day which was established to reflect on the spirit of law and to elevate the dignity of the law. In accordance with the suggestion of the first “World’s Lawyers Convention” held in Greece in July 1963, the Law Day was chosen to be commemorated on May 1st and has been celebrated since 1964. However this date was changed to April 25th in 2003, considering the historical implication that the modern judicial system was introduced to Korea for the first time, as the Law of Court Organization was enforced on April 25, 1895. Since then, the Law Day has provided the impetus for the law-abiding spirit and sense of public order to spread into all arenas of society. For Korea which has achieved both democratization and economic development through the rule of the law, now is the time to take a leap among the rank of advanced countries by accumulating the social capital called the trust of the law and principles through further enhanced, law-abiding spirit, as well as by establishing a substantial constitutionalism where the law can adequately take into account the changes in reality and the law and justice are kept alive through the fair application of the law. Issued is a commemorative stamp featuring both the Goddess of Justice, as well as the constitution of the Republic of Korea that starts with the phrase “The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic. The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea lies in its people, and all its power comes from its people.” In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Law Day, it is hoped that it provides us all with the opportunity to contemplate one more time about what the pair of scales and law books held by the Goddess of Justice denotes, as well as about the meaning and value of the law itself.
