The year 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Slovakia. Especially in recent years, the two countries have engaged in close cooperative relations through active trade and investments. In celebratio and commemoration of this 20th anniversary, Korea Post and its Slovak counterpart are issuing a set of joint stamps featuring the two countries’performance arts - Korea’s “Pansori”and Slovakia’s “Lucnica.” Pansori Epic Chant is an oral performance technique where a singer (sorikkun) sings a song composed of a story (chang), words (aniri) and body language (neoreumsae) to the tune of the drummer (gosu). As indicated by its name Pansori which means “the song sung at the scene of a spree bustling with many spectators, a Pansori is complete when the singer and the audience are joined together. Presumed to have started from the Joseon Dynasty or even before, Pansori has humorously depicted the joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure of our people, based on royalty, filial piety, gentlemanly faith and wifely chastity, thus being loved by the general public. UNESCO recognized Pansori’s uniqueness and designated it as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As a performance art where dances, songs and orchestra’s beautiful tunes get joined together, Lucnica has a 65-year-old tradition. Known around the world as the representative culture of Slovakia (Czechoslovakia before 1993), Lucnica is divided largely into three different parts: dance ensemble, chorus, and orchestra. Especially, the dance ensemble shows dynamic and energetic dances of various kinds such as the women’s dance, men’s dance, and couples’ dance. The commemorative stamp features the dance by a man-woman couple in Slovakia’s traditional folk costumes.
