Detail
Biological diversity refers to the variability of living organisms that can be found on Earth and the habitats in which they live. Indeed, a collection of biodiversity includes human beings who have lived in harmony with nature and enjoyed countless benefits from its products and services. However, human activities carried out in the name of development, have caused habitat destruction, overexploitation, environmental pollution, ecosystem degradation, and the loss of species. Globally, the population of wild vertebrate species fell by an average of one third between 1970 and 2006. This rate of extinction served as a wake-up call for action on the conservation of biodiversity. Accordingly, the international community adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1992. The Convention has three main goals including the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. Attended by 194 Parties, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention is held every two years. The 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity takes place in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea, from 29 September to 17 October, 2014. Conserving biological diversity is critical to everyone, not only to those who live in faraway places such as Africa and the Amazon rainforest. At a time when the majority of the world’s population lives in cities, without appropriate action in place, various living things may go the way of the dinosaurs which are seen only in picture books. In anticipation that the conference will serve as a venue to draw concrete action plans and to establish international cooperation on the restoration of biological diversity, a commemorative stamp is issued, showing ‘Various forms of life on Earth.
