The White Porcelain Bottle with Auspicious-character and Orchid Design in Underglaze Cobalt Blue is a fine example of blue-and-white porcelain, designated as Treasure of the Republic of Korea in 1991. It is currently housed at the National Museum of Korea. Measuring 21.1 cm in height, with a mouth diameter of 3.6 cm and a base diameter of 7.8 cm, this bottle is modest in size. It is believed to have been produced in the early 18th century at a kiln in Geumsa-ri, Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do. At first glance, the bottle may appear simple, reminiscent of a gourd-shaped flask. However, upon closer inspection, its refined form and distinctively Korean aesthetic begin to emerge. Its most striking feature is its unique shape. The lower section is subtly faceted into eight sides, giving it a clean and orderly impression, while the upper section transitions into a gently curved neck, elegantly perched atop the base. This gourd-like silhouette is a form that emerged in the late Joseon period, blending straight lines with graceful curves in a way that feels both modern and refined. The pure white surface is adorned with vivid blue designs that add vibrant beauty. Near the top of the bottle is the Chilbo pattern, symbols of treasures expertly painted to convey wishes for good fortune. On the lower body of the bottle, a delicately rendered orchid in full bloom radiates quiet elegance, evoking a Korean sensibility. The artist skillfully used negative space, arranging the patterns with a keen sense of balance and restraint. The entire surface is evenly coated with a translucent white glaze tinged with pale blue, lending the piece a clear, luminous quality. A broad, stable base provides a sense of solidity and support.
