`President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of the Republic of Maldives makes a state visit to Korea for four days from October 29 to November 1, 1984, at the invitaion of President Chun Doo Hwan. The Republic is a tropical country consisting of more than 1,200 coral islands with a total area of 298㎢, situated in the lndian Ocean to the southwest of Sri Lanka. With lslam as the state religion, the country has a population of about 170.000, which consists of Dravidians and Singhalese, speaking Dhivehi as the official language. Since 45 percent of its working population are engaged in fishery, marine products are the main exports of the Maldive lslands. Maldives won independence from England as the Republic of Maldives in 1965, and since the formal diplomatic relations were established between the country and Korea in 1967, it has supported our position in UN and meetings of non-aligned countries. During the visit , President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will have summit talks with President Chun and exchange views on matters f mutual interest. The Ministry of Communications issues this commeorative postage stamps as a sign of the hearty welcome our nation extends to President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.`
