Detail
The PyeongChang 2018, displaying a remarkable passion among athletes, successfully came to a close under the praises of it being a Games of Peace. The South Korean athletes were able to bring home five golds, eight silvers and four bronzes, for a cumulative total of 17 medals - the most medals ever recorded at the winter games by the southern peninsula. The countrys premier event, short-track speedskating, saw athletes earn a total of six medals. Among them, Lim Hyo-jun came away with the first gold medal in the Mens 1500m; Choi Min-jeong earned an amazing two gold medals in both the Womens 1500m and 3000m Relay, while Kim A-lang, Kim Ye-jin, Shim Suk-hee and Lee Yu-bin joined Ms. Choi on the podium for their collective victory in the womens relay; Lim Hyo-jun and Hwang Dae-heon earned a silver and bronze medal respectively in the Men’s 500m for the country’s first dual medalist victory in the event, and Seo Yi-ra secured a bronze medal in the Mens 1,000m. The South also was able to particularly excel in the Speed Skating event with a total of seven medals. Among them, Lee Seung-hoon made a name for himself as the first gold medalist of the first-ever “Mass Start” in the event, while Cha Min-kyu of the Mens 500m, the countrys speed-skating empress, Lee Sang-hwa of the Womens 500m, Kim Bo-reum of the Womens Mass Start and Kim Min-seok, Lee Seung-hoon and Jung Jae-won of the Mens Team Pursuit all stood on the silver medalist podium. Kim Tae-yun of the Mens 1,000m and Kim Min-seok of the Mens 1,500m also we able to contribute with two additional bronze medals. This year witnessed South Korea earn medals in an unprecedented six events, compared to the previous three. Iron Man, Yun Sung-bin, was not only the first Korean, but also the first Asian to pull off a gold medal victory in the Skeleton, while the national, 4-man Bobsleigh team comprised of Kim Dong-hyun, Seo Young-woo, Won Yun-jong and Jun Jung-lin stood atop the podium as the countrys first-ever medalists, bringing home a silver. Kim Kyeong-ae, Kim Seon-yeong, Kim Yeong-mi, Kim Eun-jung and Kim Cho-hi brought home an additional, unprecedented silver in Womens Curling, and the Napa Cabbage Boy, Lee Sang-ho, tacked on extra silver for the South in the Mens Parallel Giant Slalom, its first-ever victory in an olympic alpine event.
