Detail
Since the establishment of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in February 1971 as Korea`s first university specializing in science and technology (S&T), KAIST has been the driving force behind Korea to develop into one of the most advanced countries in S&T today. KAIST, which has led Korea`s industrialization and information revolution for the past half century, marks the 50th anniversary of its establishment this year. Korea Post is issuing a commemorative 50th Anniversary of KAIST stamp in celebration of this historic event. Korea, which was in ruins after the Korean War, attempted to industrialize during the 1960s, and focused on accelerating industrialization and S&T development. Dr. Kun-Mo Chung, former professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York who lamented `STEM fields’ brain drain,` informed the Korean President in April 1970 that `we must establish an educational and research institution specializing in S&T to stop the brain drain.` Despite uncertainties behind the new model of specialized universities, the Korean government confirmed the establishment of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS; predecessor to KAIST), for the purpose of boosting the economy through S&T. In August 1970, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) delegation led by Dr. Frederick Terman (1900–1982), referred to as ‘The father of Silicone Valley’, visited Korea and reviewed a possibility and feasibility of establishing KAIS. Following a positive report submitted by Dr. Chung and Dr. Terman’s team to USAID called ‘The Terman Report’ and the six-million-dollar USAID loan to Korea, KAIS—Korea`s first research-oriented educational institution—was established on February 16, 1971. In its early days, it was a graduate school that led industrial development in the country by developing practical technologies. After merging with and splitting from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in the 1980s as well as merging with the Korea Institute of Technology (KIT), KAIST has spared no effort to lead Korea’s S&T. KAIST successfully launched Korea`s first satellite KITSAT-1, and is currently providing world-class education and being recognized for producing impressive research outcomes. KAIST`s position as a global research-oriented university is clearly demonstrated in its annual world university rankings. KAIST, which ranked first as `the most innovative university in Asia` for three consecutive years from 2016, was also ranked 11th as `the most innovative university in the world` in 2018. It ranked 39th in the QS World University Rankings 2021, and there is only one other university in Korea that was ranked in the top 40. Over the past five decades, KAIST has produced 67,556 individuals in S&T, including 14,028 doctoral graduates, who are playing a crucial role across different parts of the country. ‘KITSAT-1’, Korea`s first satellite completed by researchers at the Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC) in 1992, and ‘HUBO’, Korea`s first humanoid robot developed by a research team led by Professor Jun-ho Oh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2004 are featured on this commemorative stamp. With this commemorative stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of KAIST, we hope you will be able to better appreciate how KAIST has evolved into one of the world’s leading research-oriented universities and feel the power of S&T in Korea based on its efforts.
