Detail
This year marks the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, the first Catholic priest in Korea. On November 14, 2019, the 40th General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris recognized Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn as a universal patron saint for 2021. Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp 200th Anniversary of the Birth of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn to celebrate this occasion. St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn was born on August 21, 1821 in Solmoe (present-day Songsa-ri, Ugang-myeon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do). His family was a devout Catholic family for many years. His great-grandfather Kim Jinhu, who accepted Catholicism first, died in prison in 1814 in Haemi, and his grandfather’s brother Kim Jonghan was arrested in 1815 during the Eulhae Persecution and died a martyr the following year in Daegu. Then, his family moved to Yongin in Gyeonggi-do Province to avoid persecution, and St. Andrew Kim grew up there and was called “Jaebok.” French missionary Pierre Maubant, who baptized St. Kim, chose him as a student on July 11, 1836 when he was 15. He studied in Macao with Thomas Choe Yang-eop and Francis Xavier Choe Bang-je. In 1844, he was diaconated with Thomas Choe in Xiaobajiazi. On August 17, 1845, he was ordinated as a priest by Bishop Jean-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste Ferréol in Gimgahang Catholic Church, Sanghai. Then, he came back to Jeju-do Island on a small boat and he went to Nabawi, Hwangsanpo near Ganggyeong in Chungcheongnam-do Province and served as a priest. In June 1846, he was arrested for helping Maistre’s missionary team to come to Joseon. On September 16, he was executed as a martyr in Saenamteo. This commemorative includes the portrait St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn (1983)—designated as the first official portrait of saint by Catholic Church in Korea’s 200th Anniversary Portrait Committee—painted by the late Moon Hakjin (Thomas Aquinas) in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Catholic Church in Korea (1984). In this portrait as part of the collection of Myeong-dong Catholic Cathedral Archdiocese of Seoul, you can see the gentle and solemn St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Korea’s first priest. The background of the stamp is Korean Saint Martyr Sculpture by Paul Choi Youngchul, which is currently in Solmoe Shrine Martyr Site in Dangjin. There is St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn bearing his cross and walking on a thorny path under the statue of Christ. The writing in the background is part of The Report on Martyr History and Martyrs in Joseon written by St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn in March 1845. Remembering the life of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, who sacrificed himself believing that “all people are created equal” at a time of social stratification, UNESCO selected 2021 as the year of celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn. We hope this commemorative stamp serves as an opportunity to commemorate St. Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, an esteemed figure for all of us to remember.
