Detail
Since 1973, Korea Post has been celebrating Philately Week with stamp collectors and enthusiasts, and issuing commemorative stamps at the Korea Philatelic Exhibition held during this period. This year, Korea Post is celebrating Philately Week from October 25 to November 7 and issuing commemorative stamps under the theme of Korean picture books that are widely recognized for their artistic merit and historic significance. The Story of Baekdu Mountain by Ryu Jae-su is a creation narrative of Baekdu Mountain that illustrates the identity of the Korean people through vivid colors and epic drawings. When first published in 1988, it was a best-seller that opened up new horizons of creative picture books in Korea. The mighty energy of Baekdu Mountain can be felt in the joyful images of people who tasted rain by the power of Baekdu Mountain in the midst of a drought. Half Past Four by Yun Seok-jung, a renowned novelist of children’s literature in Korea, is a nursery rhyme book with a title that uses the antiquated Korean phrase for `half past four.` The picture book contains heartwarming illustrations by Lee Young-kyoung that depict clever and fun images of a child who forgets to complete her mother’s errand of finding out the time in days when clocks were rare. Illustrator Lee Young-kyoung, who is known for accentuating colors in traditional Korean aesthetic style, reminisced about her own childhood in her comforting illustrations of the rural villages of the 1960s through which she gives readers a glance into a unique humor and sense of optimism. Manhee’s Home by Kwon Yoon-duck is a story that describes old household items and emotional objects through illustrations. It presents the amusement of exploring a friend’s house. Manhee who treads through colorful blankets and the rear image of her mother who watches her delivers a warm feeling to readers. This picture book helps children cultivate new emotions through drawings that accentuate colors and lines in traditional Korean aesthetic style. Kim Jae-hong’s idea that `nature and man are one` was featured in an art exhibition and made into a picture book. Children of the Dong River received the International Best Book of the Year award from the Swiss Fondation Espace Enfants. Flowing in front of siblings who are waiting for their mother to return from the marketplace is the beautiful Dong River. The picture book encompasses the writer’s desire to preserve the purity of nature. Picture books not only present Korea’s unique visual and artistic styles, but are valuable as social, cultural and historical records. Furthermore, picture books are works of art with emotional drawings that communicate with the public in addition to helping children and adults learn about the wisdom of life. We hope that the issuance of the commemorative stamps will help the public newly recognize the value of picture books and experience the fun of collecting stamps while appreciating the stories and drawings by Korea’s representative writers.
