Detail
In modern times, Korean sculpture transitioned from realism to abstraction following the influence of international art movements, and materials used in sculpting have also become all the more varied. Featured on this commemorative stamp are two of Korea’s most notable early modern sculptors Kim Chong Yung and Kim Chung sook. Kim Chong Yung (1915–1982) was a pioneer of Korean abstract sculpture who actively accepted both eastern and western art techniques without any particular bias towards either one. Kim learned Chinese literature at a young age and explored eastern traditions that emphasized authorial intent as well as western abstract art on an equal level. Kim became the first-ever Korean winner at an international sculpture competition held by the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in May 1953 to create a monument to The Unknown Political Prisoner. Later in December, Kim began to gain even greater fame with his The Bird, the first-ever piece of Korean abstract sculpture. As an artist who pursues simplicity and natural form, most of his works except for some in his later years were made in sizes that can be held in one’s arms. As a result, he attained the aesthetics of bulgak (lit. “to not sculpt”), leaving a major impression in 20th century Korean art history as a pioneer of modern Korean sculpture. Kim Chung Sook (1917–1991) was also another pioneer of modern Korean sculpture, most notably belonging to the first generation of Korean female sculptors. After living an ordinary life as a homemaker, Kim enrolled at Hongik University College of Fine Arts to major in sculpture. After learning steel sculpting and metalwork in the US, she returned to Korea and was appointed as a teaching staff at Hongik University in 1957. Kim applied welding techniques to sculpting which had only been used in construction, presenting a new direction for modern sculpture in Korea. Her earlier works used various materials, such as wood, marble and bronze, to depict the human body, and her later works were in more abstract forms. Some of her most notable works include the Mother & Child series along with her famous Flight series that depicts abstract forms of birds. The commemorative stamp series Modern Sculptors features a portrait of Kim Chong Yung and his Work 79-19 that encapsulates his bulgak aesthetics, along with a portrait of Kim Chung Sook and her Existence that simplifies the human figure. We hope this commemorative stamp series serves as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the artistic worlds of Kim Chong Yung who depicted his noble character in his works and Kim Chung Sook who presented warmth through gentle curves.
