Detail
As the first Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in Asia, Gangwon 2024 will be held in the Republic of Korea (i.e. Pyeongchang, Gangneung, Jeongseon and Hoengseong in Gangwon State) from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1, 2024. Organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this youth Olympics is one of the largest events in the world for athletes between the ages of 15 and 18. Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp series Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 to mark this special occasion.
As part of its mission to promote the health and physical activity of youths and foster the spirit of challenge, the Winter YOG builds on the Olympic Games legacy and engages young people from various countries to grow together with the goal of nurturing them into adult athletes.
Many of the same venues used for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be utilized to offer young athletes the opportunity to compete in the same arenas as past Olympic medalists. There will be a total of 81 events taking place, in which sports such as skiing, skating, ice hockey, and more will be included. We are looking forward to seeing the athletes succeed at Gangwon 2024, which is set to bring together more than 1,900 athletes from more than 70NOCs.
Moongcho the mascot of Gangwon 2024 was inspired by the white snowball that the mascots Soohorang and Bandabi of PyeongChang 2018 used to play with. In addition to displaying Moongcho’s joyful participation in the Olympic Games, the stamp series also features the slogan “Grow Together, Shine Forever” while depicting Moongcho’s enthusiastic participation in skiing, ski jumping, curling, and skeleton events. We hope that this stamp series serves as an opportunity to reflect on the values of the winter YOG, which place an emphasis on unity and growth over competition.
